Rep. Fudge Rejoins Education and the Workforce Committee

Press Release

Date: March 21, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (OH-11) returns to the Education and the Workforce Committee this week, having been reassigned to fill a vacancy resulting from the passing of Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ). A strong advocate for policies strengthening our education system and promoting job creation, Congresswoman Fudge will sit on the Workforce Protections and the Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education Subcommittees. In doing so, she leaves the Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

"I feel strongly that returning to the Education and the Workforce Committee to continue work on strengthening our education system and focusing on job creation will allow me to serve as a voice and advocate for my constituents. As our economy begins to recover, there is no better time to focus on policies that support the American workforce as well as promote education for our children from the cradle to career."

Congresswoman Fudge originally joined the Education and the Workforce Committee in 2009 and immediately made her mark as a strong voice on behalf of working Americans and our nation's children. She served on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and the Higher Education and Workforce Development Subcommittees. In this capacity, she fought for greater funding for Pell Grants to benefit low-income students and lower interest rates on federal student loans, as well as increased funding for community colleges. She advocated for sustained funding for child nutrition as well as policies that promote job creation and workforce job-training tailored to large-growth sectors.

"Through my new committee assignment, I will continue to promote policies that ensure we have a robust American workforce and economy, in addition to safe conditions for American workers. I will work with my colleagues to support early childhood programs that provide a foundation for our children. I stand by my goal of making sure that every child in this country receives a quality education."

Congresswoman Fudge also honors the many contributions of the late Congressman Donald Payne (NJ-10) to the Education and the Workforce Committee and pays tribute to his legacy:

"Donald was a leading advocate for public schools, college affordability, and workplace protections. He worked tirelessly on behalf of our nation's children and in putting forth improvements to our education system. His influence and many accomplishments on the committee will not be forgotten, but will live forever in his memory."
