Rep. Becerra Votes Against Republican Bill to Repeal Health Care Law Provision

Statement

Date: March 22, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Today after voting against legislation that would repeal a provision of the Affordable Care Act, Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and Ranking Member of the Social Security Subcommittee, released the following statement:

"Health care reform is working. Almost two years to the day after President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law, expanding access to quality health care for millions of Americans and lowering costs for our seniors, Republicans are intent on putting the insurance companies back in power and ending Medicare. After being told that "death panels' would "pull the plug on granny' and that the Affordable Care Act was a "job killer' -- all proven false -- Americans are now being lectured by the same people that a single provision in the health care reform law will "ration care.'

We've heard it all before, but here are the facts: because of the Affordable Care Act, 2.5 million more young adults now have health care coverage; 5.1 million seniors have saved on average an extra $635 on their prescription drugs; 360,000 small employers have used health care reform's tax credits to insure 2 million additional workers; and since passage of the historical health care reform law, nearly 600,000 new jobs have been created in the health care industry alone. And in less than two years, 30 million uninsured Americans will be able to purchase affordable health insurance coverage for their families.

Instead of wasting time creating false narratives about the law to scare America's seniors, I urge House Republicans to start working with Democratic members to strengthen the historic Affordable Care Act and get to work on Congress' job one: putting Americans back to work."
