Representative Becerra: House Republican Budget Chooses Millionaires over Seniors, Oil Subsidies, over Students

Statement

Today, the House of Representatives voted to pass legislation (H. Con. Res. 112) that would end the Medicare guarantee, give tax breaks to wealthy Americans and threaten basic health care for all Americans by repealing the Affordable Care Act. Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and Ranking Member of the Social Security Subcommittee, voted against the legislation and released the following statement:

"It reads "E Pluribus Unum' on the Seal of the United States--out of many, one--a profound statement from our founding fathers that we are all in this together. We are a nation that provides every opportunity for future generations to succeed and we respect our elders by ensuring dignity in their later years after a lifetime of work.

The agenda outlined in the House Republican budget contradicts that spirit of America, choosing millionaires over seniors and oil subsidies over students. You don't strengthen Medicare by ending its guarantee. You don't reduce the deficit by showering millionaires with $300 billion more in tax cuts. And you certainly don't put our children on a path to success by gutting education and health care services.

This is a raw deal for the American people.

It's time to get serious about putting Americans back to work, strengthening the middle class and growing our economy. I know America's best days are still ahead of us, but only if we fight for it."
