Pompeo Votes for Path to Prosperity

Statement

Today, the House of Representatives passed Rep. Paul Ryan's budget (H. Con. Res. 112), alternatively known as The Path to Prosperity by a vote of 228-191. Congressman Mike Pompeo (KS-04), a supporter of fiscal responsibility, released the following statement upon passage:

"National spending has been out of control for some time and Democrats who previously reigned in Congress, along with the Obama Administration, have made it far worse. This is the main reason I decided to leave the private sector to serve Kansans in our nation's capital. This lunacy had to stop.

"Our nation is in the middle of a fiscal crisis and President Obama's unserious budget proposal provides trillion dollar deficits as far as the eye can see. He offers more of the same when that pattern of reckless behavior has brought our country to the breaking point, threatening our quality of life for future generations.

"Thankfully, the thoughtful and well-received Ryan Budget will begin the process of balancing our budget while preventing the President's onerous tax increases. It focuses on the two most important priorities: growth and reform. It fixes our broken tax code to make it fair and competitive, ends special interest loopholes, and lowers Kansans' rates. It also puts our budget on a responsible path, reduces the debt as a share of the economy over the coming decade, and addresses the main drivers of debt.

"The Path to Prosperity provides bipartisan solutions to preserve Medicare for today's seniors, while ensuring it is around for future generations. The proposal guarantees coverage options to future seniors, regardless of pre-existing conditions or health history, financed by a premium-support payment adjusted to provide additional financial assistance to low-income and less-healthy seniors and less assistance to the wealthy. The Medicare health plans, including a traditional Medicare option, would compete against each other to offer higher quality care at lower cost.

"The House Republican Budget presents a choice of two futures, and Americans can now choose. The way of the Democrats in the Senate is a dead end as they refuse to produce a budget of any kind. The President's budget spends way too much and simply isn't credible. Failing to lead in an election year because it's politically expedient is not leadership. House Republicans, led by Paul Ryan, are making the tough decisions on how to fix this mess," said Pompeo.
