Pompeo Statement in Response to Kansas Redistricting Lawsuit

Statement

Location: Wichita, KS
Issues: Legal

Congressman Mike Pompeo released the following statement in response to today's hearing in the federal lawsuit over reapportionment (Essex v. Kobach), including the redistricting of Kansas' four Congressional districts:

"I have chosen not to file a motion to intervene as a party in the federal redistricting case. I have confidence that the three-judge panel deciding this matter will do its level best to ensure a workable solution. According to the 2010 census, the Fourth Congressional District's population exceeds the permissible number by about 6,900 citizens. As the court alters the borders of the district to account for that slight overpopulation, it will consider factors such as compactness, keeping communities of interest together, and changing the current configuration as little as possible. I anticipate that the court will reach its decision in a timeframe that will not require moving the filing deadline or primary election date."
