Rep. Becerra: Confirmation of Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte is Long Overdue

Statement

Date: June 14, 2012
Location: Washington, DC

Today, after a majority of United States Senators voted to confirm Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte as our nation's top diplomat in El Salvador, Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus and a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, released the following statement:

"Today's confirmation of Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte as our nation's top diplomat to El Salvador is long overdue--she is a proven leader who is just as qualified now as she was last year. I'm confident that Ambassador Aponte's commitment to democratic values, human rights and economic prosperity will strengthen our ties to the people of El Salvador and Latin America.

"The only disappointment has been the seven months of obstructionism by a minority of United States Senators, denying this distinguished diplomat an up-or-down vote, which was finally broken by the flood of support from voices across our country."
