Appropriations Committee Approves the Fiscal Year 2013 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Funding Bill

The House Appropriations Committee today approved the fiscal year 2013 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development funding bill. The legislation includes funding for the Department of Transportation, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and other related agencies. In total, the bill provides $51.6 billion in discretionary spending -- a reduction of $3.9 billion below last year's level and $1.9 billion below the President's budget request.

"This bill will help support a vibrant and safe transportation infrastructure, while making the difficult but necessary cuts needed to get our budgets back into balance. It prioritizes programs responsibly, creating an environment that fosters job creation and funds important repairs and improvements, and ensuring access to affordable housing options," House Appropriations Chairman Hal Rogers said.

Subcommittee Chairman Tom Latham added, "This legislation continues my goal and dedicated work of ending the budgeting gimmicks and accounting tricks that have plagued Washington in recent years. I'm proud that we meet our nation's transportation and housing needs while remaining fiscally responsible and accountable to hardworking American taxpayers. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress as we move this bill through the legislative process."

The following amendments to the FY 2013 Transportation/Housing and Urban Development bill were adopted by the Committee today:

Rep. Latham -- The manager's amendment makes technical and non-controversial changes to the bill and report. The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.

Rep. Price -- The amendment transfers unobligated and unused MAGLEV highway funding to a railroad crossing safety grant program. The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.

Rep. Dent -- The amendment adds report language encouraging DOT to examine and move forward with rules regarding the air transportation of personal oxygen canisters. The amendment was adopted on a voice vote.

The bill was approved by the full committee on a voice vote.
