MADISON, WI -- Last week, Rep. Kelda Helen Roys threatened legal action due to Governor Scott Walker's stonewalling Roys' open records request on mining. After receiving her letter, Walker's office responded with an email indicating that they will release the requested records this Thursday, nearly seven months after the request was made.

Rep. Roys issued the following statement on the Governor's response:

"I am glad that the Walker Administration clearly received my message that I would not stand for further delay in receiving these public records. Governor Walker has indicated that he is determined to deregulate open-pit mining -- even at the expense of environmental protection and increased likelihood that our groundwater could be contaminated with dangerous chemicals such as arsenic, mercury, and lead.

"If these documents are not released Thursday, I am prepared to take immediate legal action to force their long-overdue release. The voters of Wisconsin have a right to know about Governor Walker's contacts with his corporate donors and how this mining deregulation legislation was written. I intend to ensure that we have full knowledge of his administration's dealings with Gogebic Taconite."
