Issue Position: Safe Communities

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

We can have safer communities in Vermont. We won't get there simply by being tough on crime. We have to be smart on crime. Having safer communities starts with the people in them, not the number of arrests that have been made.

Safe Communities

21st Century law enforcement requires an Attorney General who is not only tough on crime, but is smart on crime. I'll create a comprehensive plan to deal with the prescription drug epidemic in our state. My plan will be tough on those that sell drugs, particularly drug kingpins and those resorting to violence. But, I will advocate for more treatment, better access to medication and passage of a Good Samitarian law to help ensure that we do everything we can to save lives. I'll be active partner with our Governor on his "War on Recidivism." This is a war on poverty, mental illness, substance abuse and lack of education, and must be won if we want safer communities built on support and recovery, not on misfortune and ignorance. As Attorney General, I'll bring all the stakeholders together to develop a coordinated and integrated system of care and accountability in Vermont.
