Issue Position: Transparency & Accountability

Issue Position

Date: Oct. 10, 2012

Karen believes that government should work for people. As State Senator, she has championed reforms that increase taxpayers' return on investment, cut government waste, and expand transparency and accountability.

The economic development reform law she co-authored this session overhauls the state's network of business development agencies, establishing a streamlined, cohesive model with built-in oversight to reduce redundancy and waste. All organizations involved in economic development activities will now be required--many for the first time--to submit annual reports and publish audited financial statements.

A transparency measure Karen championed in this year's budget sets up a mechanism for evaluating and reporting the efficacy of various tax credits used by corporations throughout the state. The results of this evaluation will soon be available to residents online
