Culberson Statement on the 40th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

Statement

Date: Jan. 24, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

This week marks the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision legalizing abortion. In the 40 years since Roe v. Wade, there have been more than 55 million abortions in the United States--a number twice the size of the population of Texas. That's 55 million lives that were not allowed to begin, 55 million children who were not allowed to bring joy to their families and friends, and 55 million Americans who were not allowed to work hard and strengthen our families and communities.

One step that we must take as conservatives is to stop sending taxpayer dollars to Planned Parenthood. In 2011, Planned Parenthood performed 333,964 abortions, the most in its history. To make matters worse, under the Obama Administration, taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood has increased from $362 million in 2008 to $542 million in 2011. Tax dollars should never be used to pay for abortions, and I'm proud to be a cosponsor of of two bills that would end taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood and other similar abortion providers.

This week, thousands of pro-life supporters will march on the Supreme Court. They represent Americans from all walks of life and are fighting for the rights of our unborn children. Life is the most precious gift God gave us, and we must never stop fighting to protect it.
