Rep. Carney Urges Congress To Find Responsible Alternative To Sequestration

Statement

"It's frustrating and inexcusable that the House has recessed until next week without so much as a debate about avoiding the automatic cuts by putting in place an alternative deficit reduction plan. The sequestration trigger was established to force Congress to develop a smarter, more comprehensive plan. Let's not fool ourselves: allowing these indiscriminate, across-the-board spending cuts to take effect tomorrow is not a responsible deficit reduction plan.

"Today, I led 39 of my colleagues in sending a letter to Senate and House leadership, along with President Obama, emphasizing that the best way to reduce the federal deficit -- without harming the economy -- is through a balanced approach of smart spending cuts and tax reform. A responsible plan will make serious progress on deficit reduction, while maintaining investments in areas critical to the middle class and economic growth, like manufacturing, infrastructure, and education."
