Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court decision to send the Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin case back to the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit for further assessment:

"Diversity contributes to our nation's greatness. Public policies at our nation's universities and colleges that provide equal opportunities for women and minorities also benefit the entire student population which must learn to compete in an increasingly globalized economy. The Supreme Court decision on Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin recognized those principles but also moved to place a heavy burden on our nation's schools that implement diversity policies. My hope is that even under such scrutiny, affirmative action programs like the one at UT Austin will prevail."
