Congressman Xavier Becerra on Supreme Court's DOMA and California's Proposition 8 Decisions

Statement

Date: June 26, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court struck down the misnamed "Defense of Marriage Act" (DOMA) and ruled that supporters of California's Proposition 8 did not have standing to bring their lawsuit, thus allowing LGBT couples in California to marry:

"Progress, albeit grudging progress, from our country's Supreme Court. It is remarkable to see how difficult it is for four Justices of our highest court of the land to join the rest of America.

"The good news is that we can say -- barely -- that justice and common sense have prevailed today. But our fight does not end here. There are still thousands of LGBT Americans living in states across our country who face discrimination. On the occasion of today's important step forward we must recommit ourselves to the work that remains in the fight for fair treatment of every American, regardless of who they are or whom they love."
