Congressman Xavier Becerra on House GOP's 41st Attempt to Repeal the Affordable Care Act

Statement

Date: Sept. 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the House of Representatives voted for the 41st time to undermine and repeal the Affordable Care Act, our nation's health security law:

"In fewer than three weeks, tens of millions of Americans will finally have a chance to secure quality, affordable health care coverage when the new health insurance marketplaces open up all across the country. Unfortunately, instead of working to guarantee that middle class Americans have the health care plans that they deserve and can afford, House Republicans have now voted for the 41st time to undermine and repeal the patient protections and rights that President Obama promised, Congress delivered and the Supreme Court affirmed.

"Today's Republican vote would deny millions of hardworking Americans, on average, the $2,700 premium tax credit that they are eligible for beginning on January 1, 2014. This misguided legislation would spike premiums and make it harder for middle class Americans to find a health care plan that fits their needs and budget. The so-called "income verification' bill is nothing more than another misplaced attempt to dismantle the health security law of the land.

"The Republicans who control Congress should stop playing politics with Americans' health security and start working with Democrats on common sense proposals to reignite the economy, create good paying jobs and rebuild the middle class."
