Labrador Votes to Keep Government Open, Delay Individual Mandate for One Year

Statement

Date: Sept. 30, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Raúl Labrador (R-ID) voted for a Continuing Resolution (C.R.) tonight that would keep the government open past midnight, while delaying the individual mandate for one year. The C.R. now moves to the Senate, which must pass it in order to avoid a government shutdown.

"For the second time in three nights, the House voted to keep the government open," said Rep. Labrador. "The Senate, on the other hand, refuses to negotiate, even if it means a government shutdown. The House is listening to the American people by advocating for a one-year delay of the individual mandate. The Senate, meanwhile, is trying to instigate a shutdown with the hope that Republicans will get the blame. In fact, it will be Senate that gets blamed for refusing to fix the individual mandate. The President has already delayed the employer mandate for big business. There's no reason we can't delay it for the American people too.

"The House is ready to work with the Senate, but we need the Senate to come to the table. The Senate has put us on the brink of a shutdown, which is irresponsible and unacceptable. The American people deserve better."

The C.R. includes an amendment requiring that all Members of Congress, all congressional staff (including committee and leadership staff), the President, Vice President, and all political appointees within the administration to purchase their health insurance on the ObamaCare exchange. No subsidy would be provided beyond what is required by law for all Americans.
