Fleming Votes Against Debt Ceiling Increase

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. (LA-4) issued the following statement after voting today against a bill that would raise the debt ceiling on federal spending, allowing the national debt to rise until March 2015:

"Every debt ceiling vote is a reminder that President Obama and Washington liberals steadfastly refuse to negotiate the entitlement reform and spending cuts that my constituents want to see. The president's policies have stifled economic recovery, cost jobs, and increased our national debt by more than $6 trillion, and while he claims that our deficits are down, the truth is that CBO projects annual deficits for the next two years will be larger than any previous administration. Raising the debt ceiling only assures an added burden to future generations. It's time for Washington Democrats to finally cooperate and work toward a solution, not simply vote to make the problem worse."

Note: Although Rep. Fleming voted "No," the debt ceiling measure passed the House by a vote of 221 to 201.
