DeLauro Supports Administration in Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Supreme Court Arguments

Statement

Date: March 25, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today supporting the Administration's arguments before the Supreme Court in the cases of Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. and Conestoga Wood Specialties Corporation v. Sebelius. DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Women should be able to make their own health care decisions regardless of where they work and without interference from their bosses. Guaranteeing all Americans access to quality, affordable health care was the cornerstone of the Affordable Care Act. Covering effective preventive services, including contraception, is a critical part of that and should not be dependent on whether your boss says you can have access to basic health care.

"Empowering corporate bosses to deny access to a vital, affordable part of women's medical care would be a dangerous step backwards for our society. It could open the door to employers denying a whole host of medical procedures and treatments based on their bosses' objections. Individuals have consciences, morality and religious beliefs. Businesses do not. I strongly support the Administration and Secretary Sebelius in this case."
