Congressman Xavier Becerra: Republicans Block Overdue Raise for Minimum Wage Workers

Statement

Date: April 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after Republicans in the Senate derailed a bill that would have raised the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour benefiting 28 million hard-working Americans:

"We need to build an economy that works for all Americans, not just the wealthiest few. Yet, while Republicans in the Senate blocked a vote to raise the minimum wage that would benefit 28 million hard-working Americans, Republicans in the House voted to hand over $300 billion in unpaid-for tax breaks to big corporations. Actions speak louder than words.

"Economists, experts and people across the country agree: raising the minimum wage is good for our economy and good for hard-working Americans. House Republicans should join the 195 House Democrats who have already signed the discharge petition demanding a vote to boost the out-of-date $7.25 an hour minimum wage. It's time to grow the economy and give America a raise!"
