Congressman Xavier Becerra on April Jobs Report

Statement

Date: May 2, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after the Department of Labor released its jobs report for April:

"Today's jobs report shows that our country is moving in the right direction. Our economy has created 9.2 million private sectors jobs over the last four years and the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level in five years. But our economic recovery would be much farther along if House Republicans hadn't shut down the government over their obsession with shutting down the Affordable Care Act or put up "brick walls' to every pro-growth and jobs initiative House Democrats and the President have proposed. Instead of standing in the way, House Republicans should join Democrats to close tax loopholes for companies that ship jobs overseas, to raise the minimum wage for millions of hardworking Americans and finally extend emergency unemployment insurance to help more Americans get back to work.

"It's time for House Republicans to stop worrying about party politics and start working with House Democrats to build an economy that works for all Americans, not just the wealthiest few."
