Statement

Date: May 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after President Barack Obama accepted the resignation of the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki:

"Secretary Shinseki is an American hero who dedicated his life to protecting our country. His commitment to our men and women in uniform goes without question. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his lifetime of service and for knowing and doing what's right.

"Today, Secretary Shinseki remarked that "we now know that VA has a systemic, totally unacceptable lack of integrity within some of our Veterans Health Administration facilities.' He went on to assert, "I will not defend it because it is indefensible. But I can take responsibility for it, and I do.'

"Thank you, Secretary Shinseki, for being a man of your word and for serving the country you love so honorably and admirably."
