U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement after the Federal Communications Commission voted to move forward with a proposed rule that would allow internet providers to charge fees for faster access to Internet users.

"Chairman Wheeler's proposal undercuts net neutrality and would favor wealthy corporations by allowing "pay to play' rules to stifle small businesses. This proposal is bad for consumers, bad for the next generation of businesses, and bad for the future of our democracy.

"American consumers, including the tens of thousands who have contacted my office, have been clear: The way forward is to regulate Internet providers like telephone companies. The FCC is asking for comment and I hope the American people will continue to make their voices heard."
