Congressman Xavier Becerra: Conservatives on Supreme Court Elevate Corporations Ahead of Women

Statement

Date: June 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after a divided Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby that some corporations can deny a female employee critical healthcare coverage that allows her to exercise her reproductive rights:

"Decisions about a woman's healthcare should be made by her with her doctor, not by her employer. The out-of-touch conservatives on the Supreme Court have set a dangerous precedent, using religion as a weapon to permit some corporations to discriminate against their female employees by denying them coverage for contraception.

"Only in an Orwellian world would the religious beliefs of a business owner override the medical rights and needs of its female employees. With this decision, the conservatives on the Court have dropped all pretenses about their hard turn to the Right. The Republicans' War on Women has now officially reached the Supreme Court.

"It's time someone broke the news to the conservatives on the Court that corporations really aren't people . . . and women really are."
