Issue Position: Finding Common Ground

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

We've often had divided state government in Wisconsin, and Republicans currently control both houses of the legislature as well as the governorship. To effectively represent this district, I will need to be able to work not just with my fellow Democrats, but with Republicans as well, especially those who represent neighboring districts with shared interests. While my principles are clear, I have a record of consensus-building and compromise that has made me an effective city councilor.

Although the Beloit City Council is non-partisan, various political viewpoints are represented. I have worked to find common ground with my colleagues, and earned their respect to be unanimously elected as City Council Vice President after only one year in office, and unanimously reelected last year. While we don't, and shouldn't, always agree, we almost always get along. I've stood on principle when necessary to be on the losing end of a 6-1 vote. But I've also worked to build coalitions to be on the winning end of a 6-1 vote. I will bring that spirit to Madison and attempt to lead within my party and find common ground across the aisle whenever possible to support the needs of the 45th district.
