Griffin Supports Reforming Training Programs to Help Job Seekers

Press Release

Date: July 9, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Tim Griffin (AR-02) issued the following statement today after the House passed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (H.R. 803):

"Our nation cannot afford Washington's top-down approach to job creation that dictates policies that have tried and failed for decades, and today's bipartisan bill is a smart, new way to modernize our workforce training system. This bill helps America's job seekers acquire the skills and education they need to succeed in today's economy by providing better access to job-training services, while it saves taxpayer dollars by eliminating 15 ineffective and duplicative programs. I'm proud to support reforms that will aid and encourage further development of our workforce in Arkansas and across the country."

In March 2013, the House passed the Supporting Knowledge and Investing in Lifelong Skills (SKILLS) Act (H.R. 803), a bill to ensure a modern, efficient and effective workforce development system to help job seekers. The legislation incorporated key principles to streamline a confusing maze of programs and burdensome federal mandates, promote skills training for in-demand jobs, reduce administrative costs and unnecessary bureaucracy and deliver strong accountability over the use of taxpayer dollars.

On May 21, leaders in the House and Senate announced a bipartisan, bicameral agreement to reform federal workforce development services. By sticking to the same reform principles, the final agreement will lead to a leaner, more effective and more accountable workforce development system.
