Tester Amendment to End Out-of-Control Spending in Elections Gains Traction

Senator Jon Tester today released the following statement after members of the U.S. House of Representatives joined his fight against out-of-control spending in elections by introducing a Constitutional amendment that gives Congress and states the power to limit spending in elections and make government work better:

"Montanans made crystal clear in 2012 that they don't want corporations to spend unlimited money to decide our elections, and now the U.S. House of Representatives has followed our lead. Our state knows the dangers of out-of-control political spending, and I'll work with the rest of Montana's Congressional delegation to put people and their ideas back in charge of our elections."

The U.S. House's Constitutional amendment mirrors the Senate's amendment to allow Congress and states to determine campaign contribution limits. The amendment is sponsored by Senator Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and 44 other Senators.

During the 2012 election, Montanans voted by a 3-to-1 majority calling on the Montana Congressional delegation to introduce legislation affirming that corporations are not human beings with constitutional rights. Tester listened to Montana voters and authored another Constitutional amendment that affirms corporations are not people and do not have the same Constitutional rights.
