Issue Position

Maura has an unmatched record of leadership and advocacy on behalf of the LGBT community. As Chief of the Civil Rights Division, Maura developed and argued the nation's first successful challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). At the time, in 2009, the President was still defending the law and the majority of Americans were still opposed to equal marriage.

Maura has prosecuted people for hate crimes and trained police officers and law enforcement on working with victims targeted because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. She oversaw the Attorney General's Office's work on the Massachusetts anti-bullying law and advised state agencies on the law, and advised on and advocated for state legislation to end discrimination against transgender people.

Maura will ensure that Massachusetts continues to lead the nation in supporting LGBT rights and fighting persistent discrimination in housing and employment.
