Issue Position: Game and Fish

Issue Position

Six percent of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's funding comes from the state's general fund, and that's earmarked for specific management purposes, some dictated by state government (aquatic invasive species and sage grouse) and others dictated by the federal government (wolves, grizzlies and other endangered species). The rest of the agency's budget comes from sportsmen and excise taxes on fishing lures.

The misguided policies and outright indifference of our federal partners has led to mismanagement of our forests and the presence of too many predators, and has forced Wyoming to spend resources and time on non-game and fish issues. It is reasonable for the people of Wyoming -- not just hunters and fishermen -- to step up and support the management of this world class resource.

We all enjoy Wyoming's wildlife; the opportunity to hunt, fish and photograph brings people here from around the world. Hatchery stocking programs are critical to communities like ours, where small businesses thrive, because of the blue ribbon Platte River. In today's world, Mother Nature cannot replenish herself on her own, and if there aren't any fish in those waters, people aren't coming. I am fully in support of the Game and Fish Department.
