Congressman Xavier Becerra Votes Against Reckless Republican Republican Lawsuit

Statement

Date: July 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement after voting against a House resolution authorizing the unprecedented use of taxpayer dollars to sue the President of the United States:

"Republicans in Congress are living in the Twilight Zone. Today, we got word that our economy grew at one of its fastest clips in years, expanding GDP by 4 percent. Last month, 288,000 Americans found new jobs, marking 5 straight months of job growth exceeding 200,000. So what are we doing in the House of Representatives? The Republican majority prefers to waste taxpayer time and dollars voting for reckless lawsuits to fire partisan attacks against the President for doing his job.

"Now is the time to be working with the President to build on the strength of 52 straight months of job growth, not suing him for his success. We should pass legislation to increase the minimum wage, not shut down the government at a cost of $24 billion to the taxpayers.

"We have real work to do in Congress. Republicans' shutdown, do-nothing mentality is recklessly driving this Congress towards senseless lawsuits and whispered impeachment. The big losers: America's middle class, whose priorities are shoved to the sidelines."
