Blog: #WalkwithME: Father of Two Laid Off While CEO Got 29% Raise

Statement

Walking through West Gardiner with my husband Brandon on Sunday, I met a man named Rich who had two bottles of water and a story for us. He said he had heard about the 350-mile Walk Across Maine for Jobs and the Economy. There in his yard with his two young daughters, he said he'd just been laid off with more than 100 coworkers a few days before. Instead of an in-person conversation or any offer of assistance, he'd gotten a five-minute phone call announcing he would be unemployed when the line went dead.

I asked him whether his company had been struggling. "Our CEO got a 29 percent raise this year," he said.

That's why I invited Rich to speak in Lewiston at our press conference the next day.
