Horsford Statement On 49th Anniversary Of Voting Rights Act

Statement

Date: Aug. 6, 2014
Location: North Las Vegas, NV

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) released the following statement commemorating the 49th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which was signed into law on August 6, 1965:

"There is no more fundamental right in our nation than the right to vote. Voting rights are essential to who we are as Americans and represent the strength of our democracy. In 1965, that right was out of reach for millions of Americans. The Voting Rights Act was a historic achievement that changed that unacceptable reality. For decades, this legislation helped strike down discriminatory voting practices across the country. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court significantly weakened the Voting Rights Act in 2013, threatening the voting rights of millions of Americans. Voter discrimination is still a significant and salient problem in communities across the country. That is why we must reauthorize the Voting Rights Act by passing the Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2014, which will once again strengthen the democratic process for all."
