Lt. Governor Brown Applauds Federal District Court Ruling Upholding Common-Sense Gun Violence Prevention Law

Date: Aug. 12, 2014
Location: Baltimore, MD
Issues: Guns Legal

This afternoon, the Federal District Court in Baltimore upheld key provisions of the Firearm Safety Act of 2013. In the ruling, Judge Catherine C. Blake determined that Maryland's ban on the sale of military style assault rifles and extended magazines that hold more than 10 bullets is constitutional.

This ruling also highlights a major difference between the candidacy of Lt. Governor Brown and his Republican opponent Larry Hogan. In 2013, Brown worked tirelessly to win support for the Firearm Safety Act, holding several public town halls across the state and working with legislators to secure their votes. Hogan on the other hand has made it clear that he opposes this important legislation that's making our streets and our schools safer.

"In response to the tragedy in Newtown and the all too frequent acts of gun violence on our own streets, Marylanders came together and took real action by passing a common-sense gun violence prevention law," said Lt. Governor Anthony Brown. "I applaud the Federal District Court's ruling today upholding the core provisions of the Firearm Safety Act. One of the most important responsibilities for any Governor is ensuring that all of our communities remain safe. As long as Larry Hogan and the Republicans continue to support the sale of military style assault weapons and 30 round magazines with cop killing bullets, our work is not finished. In this election, Marylanders have a clear choice between two very different futures for our families."
