Trying to get his name out, House candidate David Young is getting help from his well-known mentor.

It's a change for Young to now enter a room followed by the same senator he followed for seven years as his chief of staff.

"He's got good judgment, works hard. The best thing is he's ready to go to work on day one," Sen. Chuck Grassley said.

Young spent two decades learning the ropes in D.C. working for two other senators before Grassley, but he said that does not make him a Washington insider as attack ads claim.

"It puts you very much in touch with Iowa when you're on the phone with Iowans every day, and you're hearing their heartaches, dreams, and many times, their solutions," Young said.

He calls himself a listener and an optimist, the grandson of a farmer and a preacher. Overall, Young describes himself as "a normal person."

"I'm David Young, from a small town: Van Meter. I like to spend time with family, my faith is important to me, like anyone else I like to go on a jog, read a book, see a movie. I'm a normal person," Young said.

The 46-year-old Drake graduate calls himself a Conservative to the right of center, who is pro-life and pro-guns, wanting to cut federal spending and taxes.

"We have a $17.7 trillion debt. Iowans hate debt, I hate debt. People have to balance their budgets -- families do, businesses do," he said.

The top thing he learned from Grassley is the need for oversight to keep government accountable.

"It seems like we've been working for the government, the government needs to work for people," he said. "I would be honored to serve Iowa."

Young insists his experience in the beltway can only benefit Iowans in the heartland.
