Jordan Statement on Politico Interview with Lois Lerner

Statement

Date: Sept. 22, 2014

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana), chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform's Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Job Creation and Regulatory Affairs, made the following comments regarding Politico's interview with former IRS employee Lois Lerner:

"Lois Lerner's interview is a poke in the eye to the American citizens who were targeted by the IRS for exercising their most fundamental right to speak out against their government. Ms. Lerner's desire to play the victim to the press while refusing to answer questions about her conduct from Congress underscores why the House of Representatives held her in contempt. There are many unanswered questions, and her recent statements to the press answer none of them while suggesting that she has the answers.

"This is just another reason why we need a special prosecutor. Ms. Lerner's failure to be straightforward and honest with the American people and the body representing them suggests she's hiding information vital to uncovering the truth about the IRS's targeting.

"The Obama Justice Department must prosecute Lois Lerner for her criminal actions at the IRS and her blatant contempt of our efforts to get to the truth. Congress must continue to investigate this matter, and Attorney General Eric Holder must appoint a special prosecutor. The American people deserve justice."
