At the dedication of a memorial to recognize Gold Star Families, U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) praised the service and sacrifice of West Virginia military families and lauded their example of patriotism as a unifier of America.

"Gold Star Families not only lift the morale and spirits of the people of the United States, they also help to bind us together as a Nation. May this monument always stand as a reminder of those who answered the call, those we lost in service to our Nation and of those strong, courageous Gold Star Families whose service, and strength, and sacrifice has lived on," said Rahall.

The monument is the third in the Nation and second in West Virginia honoring Gold Star Families, which include households where a family member has been killed in military service.

"When duty calls, West Virginia answers. We take great pride in that. I am always honored to participate in an effort that has the blessing of Woody Williams. Woody's Foundation and all those who support it honor American sacrifice," said Rahall.

Rahall has been a leader in Congress in supporting military families, including his efforts to increase military pay and benefits and shield servicemembers and their dependents from budget cuts.

"I have made it my mission in Congress to ensure that the sacrifices of our military members and their families are honored in tangible acts, and not just offered in spirit; honored in words written in law and not just those spoken on Veterans Day," said Rahall.
