DeSantis: Releasing Criminal Illegal Aliens is Reckless

Statement

Date: Feb. 3, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

In light of reports showing that of approximately 36,000 convicted criminals released by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2013, more than 1,000 of them have already been convicted of new crimes, Rep. Ron DeSantis (FL-06), chairman of the House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security, is calling for an investigation. DeSantis issued the following statement:

"When in 2013 the Obama administration released 36,000 convicted criminals who were in our country illegally, it represented a stunning display of recklessness. Now, we are seeing the consequences of this recklessness: more than 1,000 of these criminals have already been convicted of new crimes, including rape, child molestation and assault with a deadly weapon. These are people who had no right to be in our country to begin with. By failing to enforce the law, the Obama administration is placing the public safety at risk. Congress needs to shed light on this reckless policy and the threat to the security of our people posed by it. I plan on holding a hearing on this issue as soon as possible."
