Congressman Becerra: Five Years Into Affordable Care Act, Millions of Americans Gain Health Security

Statement

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement marking the five-year anniversary of the signing into law of the landmark Affordable Care Act:

"The facts are clear - the Affordable Care Act is working. Since the law took effect in 2010, 16.4 million uninsured Americans have gained health coverage and the cost of health care has grown at the slowest rate on record. California is leading the charge with more than 3.4 million people gaining coverage. You can't beat the security and peace of mind that comes from having a doctor or hospital within your reach.

"Unfortunately, the law is under attack again in the Supreme Court, where opponents are questioning whether the ACA intended to provide tax credits to families who buy health insurance through the federal marketplace. As someone who helped pass this law, I know firsthand that our intent was always clear: to save lives and assist families financially to afford coverage. I am confident that the Supreme Court will reject this calculated lawsuit meant to cripple the affordability of health insurance for families across America. After all, we have courts in America to protect our rights, not take them away."
