Today, Representative Tim Walz (D-MN) released the following statement after the House passed a clean, long-term bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security.

"Funding the Department of Homeland Security should not be a partisan issue. I'm glad this re-run is over and Speaker Boehner finally stood up to his Tea Party base, but it shouldn't have taken this long.

"Tea Party Republicans have proven time and time again that they cannot govern. Never has that been more clear than today, with their dangerous attempt to shut down the Department of Homeland Security--tasked with preventing and responding to potential terrorist attacks on American soil--simply to play politics with immigration. They never had a viable end game. They simply wanted to create chaos, which they do every three to four months as they lurch from crisis to crisis.

"This isn't how our government is supposed to work. Rigid ideology should not win out over pragmatic, common sense solutions. The American people deserve better. The American people deserve a government that works; a government founded on compromise and pragmatic populism, not rigid ideology. Moving forward, I will continue to do all I can to work with pragmatic members from both sides of the aisle to restore the American people's faith in our democracy."
