Grijalva Introduces Bill to Support School Libraries

Statement

Today, Congressman Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ) introduced legislation to ensure school libraries across the country are adequately funded and provide staff the resources needed to support student learning. The Strengthening Kids' Interest in Learning and Libraries Act (SKILLS Act) provides funding for the Improving Literacy through School Libraries grant program, and requires schools receiving the funds to employ at least one state certified school library media specialist.

"The only thing moving faster than the speed of information in this day and age is the means with which we access it," said Rep. Grijalva. "If we want our kids to succeed in our constantly changing world, then we must make sure they have the skills needed to thrive.

"School libraries serve as a second classroom for students. But learning to read is not enough -- students need to know where to find information, and how to access it. A school library program that is properly funded will ensure students have access to innovative learning experiences. By employing a media specialist in every school library, the SKILLS Act will lead the way in that effort."
