Issue Position: "Ban the Box"--Give those who have paid for their crimes a second chance

I support common-sense legislation that allows those convicted of crimes who have paid their debt to society to join the workforce without bearing a stigma that can make finding employment nearly impossible. A one-time offense can become a lifelong barrier to employment. I support legislation to "ban the box" at the top of job applications to state agencies that anyone convicted of a crime must check. Without the box, the state agency can still do a background check if the job requires it, but at least former offenders will have a chance to be considered based on their qualifications and have a reasonable opportunity to compete for jobs and find closure and acceptance.
