Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement regarding the US Supreme Court landmark decision supporting marriage equality:

"This historic decision affirms all American families equal rights under the law. I applaud the Supreme Court for acting to recognize an individual's right to enjoy the same federal benefits regardless of the sexual orientation of their marriage. I am proud to defend the civil rights of all American's including the LGBT community.

"With today's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court struck down state bans on the right to choose their partner and requires states to recognize marriages performed in other states in accordance with the Fourteenth Amendment. I have been a longtime advocate for marriage equality and equal rights for all Americans. This is a great day for America and to reaffirm that our Constitution is a living document."
