The Daily Nonpareil - Robotics Students Impress Young

A group of robotic students at Abraham Lincoln High School got a healthy vote of confidence from a local Congressman Wednesday.

"These kids are going to go somewhere," Rep. David Young said his visit with them as part of his daylong tour of Council Bluffs. "They were talking to each other and solving problems. It's about working together."

Robotics can used in so many fields like manufacturing and national defense, Young said. Robotics can be used to find deadly ground explosives, saving the lives of soldiers, he said.

"It's a great thing Abraham Lincoln High School is doing," Young said.

After his visit there, Young greeted members of the Council Bluffs Chamber of Commerce, where he discussed a variety of issues. Border security was one of them. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as installing a fence across the entire border with Mexico, he said. For example, the area around San Diego, Calif., is heavily populated and double fencing may be needed there along with high observation towers and bright lights for scanning the surrounding land, he said.

"They're (drug dealers) building tunnels and even coming in on jet skis," said Young, who visited various border crossings recently.

In Arizona, where it's more desolate, more border patrols on horses are needed, while the problem in Texas is stopping river rafts from crossing the Rio Grande, Young said.

"We can secure the border, it's just a matter of will (power)."

He wasn't happy with the recent deal with Iran over its future use of nuclear energy.

"I don't think they can be trusted. Congress needs a role in this big time and do what it can to keep sanctions on them as long as possible."

On foreign aid, Young said there must be certain "conditions," like free and open elections, before a particular country receives U.S. dollars.

Following that event, Young hosted a gathering for Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Young spent the day in Council Bluffs since Congress is on its Easter break.
