Rokita - Fighting for Schools; Putting Parents and Education Leaders Back in Charge

Press Release

Date: July 8, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Rep. Rokita (IN-04), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, released the following statement after the House passed the Student Success Act, a bill he co-authored, that will replace No Child Left Behind.

"Every student deserves an effective teacher, an engaging classroom, and a quality education. However, for far too long the current K-12 education law has failed to provide students this fundamental right.

"I set out four years ago to fight for a commonsense education bill that took Washington out of the way and restored transparency, choice, and flexibility back to our schools and today we accomplished that goal," said Representative Todd Rokita.

The Student Success Act is a conservative proposal that will stop the federal government from running schools through executive fiat, restore local control, and empower parents and education leaders to hold schools accountable for effectively teaching students.

"The Student Success Act locks in conservative gains and puts the education of our nation's children back where it belongs -- in the hands of parents, teachers, and state and local leaders who can directly and meaningfully deliver a quality education to students. I thank Chairman Kline for his support in passing this commonsense legislation and my colleagues on the House Education and the Workforce Committee," added Rokita.

The bill passed 218 to 213.
