Congressman Becerra: Today's House Education Bill Deserves a Failing Grade

Statement

Date: July 8, 2015
Location: Washington D.C.
Issues: K-12 Education

Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement regarding his vote against H.R. 5, the grossly misnamed "Student Success Act:"

"All of our children, regardless of where they grow up, deserve a fair shot at a quality education. H.R. 5 fails miserably on that sense. Instead of improving our schools and supporting innovation, it takes us backwards.

"This Republican legislation locks in harmful budget cuts to our classrooms and shifts funds away from children who go to school in underserved communities. The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest school district in the country serving mostly working class families, stands to lose up to $782 million over the next six years under this bill. How is that progress for our children and their education?

"It's time for Congress to step up to the plate and start putting points on the board for the American people. Let's work together to increase accountability for our schools, give our educators the tools they need to succeed, and make sure all our children have the best chance to learn and achieve the American Dream."
