Rep. Ellison Statement on DACA Anniversary

Statement

Date: June 15, 2015
Location: Minneapolis, MN

Rep. Ellison released the following statement today to celebrate the third anniversary of the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

"Elena is a student at the University of Minnesota. She works when she's not in class to help support her family. Elena's recent job promotion means her mom only needs to work one job. But under our broken immigration system, Elena would be shut out from opportunities because she wasn't born in the United States. Applying for DACA three years ago changed the future of this hard-working Minnesotan.

"Elena isn't alone. Protecting kids who were brought to the United States as children is helping thousands of young Minnesotans come out of the shadows. They are getting an education and becoming leaders in their communities. Three years since being created, DACA has helped thousands of students like Elena, but there are still thousands more who are eligible for DACA who have not applied. I encourage every eligible Minnesotan to contact trusted resources, like the Mexican Consulate or the Immigrant Law Center, and apply for DACA."
