Rep. Ellison: Trans-Pacific Partnership a Bad Deal for Working Americans

Statement

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) released the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed a package containing Trade Adjustment Assistance and the African Growth and Opportunity Act.

"The fight against bad trade deals now turns to the details -- negotiated in secret -- in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. From allowing multinationals to sue the United States if our laws hurt their profits, making our food less safe, lowering labor standards, increasing the cost of medicine and sending jobs overseas, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is a bad deal for working Americans. Period.

"Negotiations over the Trans-Pacific Partnership could be an opportunity for the United States to change the way trade happens around the world. We should have a fair trade policy to promote higher wages, protect our air and water, and forge a global economy that puts people above profits. Unfortunately, the current text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership is not that deal.

"I will continue to oppose any trade deal that puts corporate interests above creating jobs and increasing wages for working Americans."
