Fleming: Traditional Marriage Still Best For Children & Society

Statement

Date: June 26, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to overturn state laws that define marriage as between a man and a woman:

"I am greatly disappointed and disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to redefine marriage today. It's been proven statistically that children are most successful in life when they are raised in a family with both a mom and a dad. While this is not always possible, I remain a strong defender of traditional marriage knowing it provides the best outcome for families and society.

"Today's decision endangers the free exercise of religion enshrined in the First Amendment. And because we know the courts can't always be trusted to carry out the will of the people or the Constitution, we must now work harder to protect businesses, institutions, and organizations that uphold traditional marriage from discrimination or from being forced to violate their conscience. I remain committed to defending these Americans and their institutions from the infringement of their fundamental First Amendment rights of free speech and free exercise of religion."
