Rep. Stevens Secures Millions for Beck Road Improvement Corridor in House Transportation Bill July 1, 2021 Press Release Washington, DC-- Today, Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) voted in favor of the INVEST Act, a five-year, $715 billion surface transportation reauthorization and water infrastructure bill that will create good-paying jobs and invest in communities like Michigan's 11th District. Funding for the Beck Road Improvement Corridor was included in the bill as well as two of Rep. Stevens' amendments to combat wrong way driving and increase research for more resilient infrastructure such as pavement materials. "Finally, through the INVEST Act 18 million dollars will be allocated to SE Michigan to make desperately needed fixes to the Beck Road Improvement Corridor and separate the railroad crossing in Wixom," said Rep. Stevens (D-MI). "The rate of traffic fatalities on Beck Road are 10 times higher than the regional average, an unacceptable figure. After years of federal funding being denied, I am thrilled to see SE Michigan infrastructure projects being prioritized at the federal level. Two of my amendments were added to the final version of the INVEST Act. The first creates a new program for centers of excellence to improve the resilience of transportation infrastructure, including pavement materials for natural disasters and extreme weather. This is particularly important for Michigan, where climate change is causing increased flooding and rainfall and the paving materials for our roads have not been able to keep up. Finally, my amendment to expand a pilot program on vehicle sensor data solutions to include technology solutions to combat wrong way driving was added to the bill. This is in response to the tragic death of the Abbas family in January 2019, a family of five from Northville who were killed by an intoxicated driver who was driving the wrong way. It is my sincere hope that we can begin working together and using innovation to prevent more senseless and tragic losses. I remember the Abbas family today and every day and am honored to have this amendment included." The INVEST Act is a down payment on infrastructure for the American people. A breakdown of the bill is as follows: $319 billion for highway investments including funding to fix 47,000 structurally deficient bridges $105 billion to improve and expand public transportation and strengthen Buy America requirements to boost domestic jobs in rail and bus manufacturing $10 million for vehicle safety investments which includes drunk driving prevention technology $60 billion in passenger rail investments which will triple Amtrak funding and make safety improvements for railroad crossing across the country
