Hoyer: President Trump Had No Choice But to Sign Bipartisan Russia Sanctions Bill Into Law

Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after President Trump signed Russia, Iran, and North Korea sanctions legislation into law after it passed the House and Senate with veto-proof majorities:

"President Trump had no choice but to sign our bipartisan Russia sanctions bill into law, given the veto-proof majorities with which it passed the House and Senate. Americans from across the political spectrum are deeply concerned -- and rightly so -- about Russia's interference in our election and its aggression in Ukraine. Provocative actions by both North Korea and Iran are also deeply alarming to all Americans. North Korea's nuclear posturing and missile testing demands a serious response, as does Iran's continued pursuit of ballistic missile technology. This law makes it clear that the United States Congress will not tolerate Iran's ongoing support for terror which threatens Israel and the United States and destabilizes the Middle East.

"Our sanctions bill will ensure that this President cannot take action unilaterally to benefit Russia without any change in its behavior. This is necessary due to the maelstrom of controversy relating to possible collusion by his campaign officials with Russia to sway the 2016 election in his favor. Members of Congress -- both in the Majority and the Minority -- can and will hold him accountable."
