Hoyer Statement on North Korea's Most Recent Ballistic Missile and Nuclear Tests

Statement

Date: Sept. 3, 2017
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement following North Korea's most recent ballistic missile and nuclear tests:

"These most recent ballistic missile and nuclear tests by North Korea are abhorrent and demand an international response that goes beyond words of condemnation. China must work with the international community to isolate the Kim regime and make clear that nobody will sit idly by and tolerate such actions that threaten the peace and stability of the region and our world.

"Furthermore, the United States must not abdicate its leadership by unilaterally withdrawing from our trade pact with the Republic of Korea. Doing so will not resolve trade issues, but would undermine a key tool in supporting our ally against North Korean aggression. I urge the Administration to apply smart strategy to this challenge and not risk emboldening or encouraging Mr. Kim and his cronies by sending a signal that our country could ever waver in our steadfast defense of the Republic of Korea."
